sssssssssssThe DMV: an Absurdist Reading
The objective of this book design was to take a location and to capture its essence within the pages of a book design. The DMV has alway felt like a fairly absurd experience, so it only felt natural to try and wrestle with the DMV as an establishment through the lens of one of Albert Camus’ most famous absurdist works: “The Myth of Sisyphus” (as well as various Yelp reviews).

Drawing upon the myth that features a stone being endlessly rolled up a hill, I wanted to utilize a triangular motif to represent the hill that Sisyphus must climb. I also wanted to draw upon the visual language that is already well-established in the many forms that the DMV provides the people. I replicated the boxed structure of the forms in the page numberings and review sections of the work.

I also tried to work with bright color in this piece, despite the fact that a DMV is a typically drab establishment. I wanted to highlight the character progression in the tale of Sisyphus with the color scheme of the book. This book to be a playful exploration of the DMV, and the colors reflect this interpretation.
