Portrait of a Dead Girl attempts to depict the objectification of women through the sequencing of Robert Coutelas’ female portraiture. Every painting is placed where the left eye is in the center of the page so that as the reader looks upon the paintings, the paintings look back. The paintings also have differing levels of abstraction, so I attempted to sequence them from most to least abstracted to try and bring out the degredation of the female form.
I paired the paintings with an album by The Last Dinner Party called The Prelude to Ecstasy which discusses themes of feminism and the difficulties faced by young women in a degrading society. I wanted the songs to be a companion to the image, so the only text in the book is pushed to the marginalia, more as a texture than as something to read.
